The International Hazelnut, Nut and Chestnut Festival is held in the Zagatala region of Azerbaijan.
This holiday is quite young, and the first festival was held in 2018
The International Hazelnut, Nut and Chestnut Festival is held by the Executive Authority of the Zagatala region with the support of the Ministries of Agriculture, Culture, and Agrarian Procurement and Supply OJSC.
The festival is attended by representatives of the Presidential Administration, ambassadors of about 20 countries in Azerbaijan, representatives of ministries, and the intelligentsia.
The main goal of the festival is to widely demonstrate the economic, cultural and tourism potential of Azerbaijan, in particular, the Zagatala region.
What awaits you:
National sweets and dishes baked with walnuts, hazelnuts and chestnuts. Art objects and other crafts made from nuts, paintings, sculptures, etc.
Shekerbura, halva, baklava, badambura, etc. Nuts are present in almost all national sweets. The hazelnut festival presents dishes based on a variety of recipes. Mahara is a national Zakatala dish. It is cooked on a sadj, a special frying pan. The delicacy resembles a pancake because it symbolizes the sun.
Mahara is our traditional delicacy. It is often baked during holidays. It can be served with kefir, sour cream and honey, or with peeled nuts and sugar.
There is not only something to try, but also something to look at. Next to the delicacies, there are crafts made from walnut wood, figurines made from shells. Even children's costumes made from hazelnuts, which in Zagatala are called the pride of the region and are exported to 25 countries, including the CIS and Europe.

Zagatala-Balakan region is rich in historical monuments, which will be difficult to see in one day. In the very center of Zagatala there is an ancient Albanian church and fortress. The city has many beautiful parks and squares, one of them is the central, oldest. And in the very center of the city of Balaken, a 17th-century mosque with a 45-meter minaret has been preserved. This building is one of the largest and highest minaret mosques in Azerbaijan. Here, next to the mosque, an ancient cemetery has been preserved. You can learn the history of the region in the local history museum, which contains products of traditional crafts, archaeological finds indicating that this region was inhabited already in the Neolithic era. In Balakan, not only mosques, but also various temples have been preserved. In turn, according to the testimony of the ancient historian and geographer Strabo, in ancient times the territory of the Balakan region was called the "Land of Temples". The most famous and preserved to this day are the Nur Church and the Darvaz Temple.
