1001 Reasons to Visit Azerbaijan!
First, let’s address a common misconception among travelers: Baku is not all of Azerbaijan, and Azerbaijan is not just Baku! At best, tourists ask to visit Lahij and Sheki too. Many spend 2–3 days in Baku and one day exploring Lahij and Sheki, then assume they’ve “seen Azerbaijan.” Sadly, that’s where it ends. This is a profound misunderstanding—and it’s our fault. I aim to fix this, however bold it sounds. Over the years, I’ve proven this wrong to tourists from Japan, New Zealand, France, Germany, Russia, China, and more in just 3–4 days.
Take the Maiden Towers: ask locals how many exist in Azerbaijan, and they’ll say 1 or 2. The truth? There are 9! Azerbaijan is a land where East meets West, hugging the Caspian Sea (the world’s largest lake). Its natural wealth—breathtaking landscapes, rare fruits like feijoa (which thrives only here), pomegranates, persimmons, and citrus—will leave you speechless.
Why Azerbaijan?
- 9 of Earth’s 12 climate zones thrive here.
- Deserts, mountains, forests—every terrain except icebergs (and we’re fine without them!).
- The “Land of Fire”: Centuries before ships or planes, idol-worshippers pilgrimaged to our Temple of Fire Worshippers, still standing 30 minutes from Baku’s center.
Beyond Baku
- 1,200 national monuments, 760 of global significance, 64 UNESCO-listed.
- Noah’s Mausoleum in Nakhchivan—where legend says the Ark’s captain was buried.
- Ganja, our 4,000-year-old “second city” (Smithsonian-confirmed!).
- Ancient settlements dating to 7,000 BCE.
Natural Wonders
- Mud Volcanoes: Azerbaijan has 350 of the world’s 800. NASA says they resemble Mars! Their mineral-rich clay heals ailments from arthritis to skin diseases.
- Naftalan’s “Oil Spa”: The only museum of crutches left by cured patients.
Cultural Mosaic
- Khinəlg, a 2,300m-high village where the Kyat people—Noah’s descendants—speak a language unrelated to any other. Their stone homes stack like staircases, with rooftops as neighbors’ courtyards.
- Red Settlement: A 300-year-old mountain Jewish enclave surviving Persian pogroms and Soviet repression.
- Ivanovka: Home to Molokans; Lahij’s Tats; Gusar’s Lezgins—a tapestry of ethnicities.
Hidden History
- German Legacy: In 1817, Swabian Lutherans founded Helenendorf (now Göygöl), building St. John’s Church by 1857.
- The Siemens Fortune: Made in Gadabay via copper and gold—using electricity while Europe still relied on kerosene lamps!
- The Nobels’ Roots: Their wealth began here in Azerbaijan’s oil fields.
